ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – A team of Pakistani intelligence officers and diplomats went to Cuba to help interrogate Taliban and al-Qaida prisoners held at the U.S. military base at Guantanamno Bay, Pakistani authorities said Friday.
The team, which includes members of the country's Inter-Services Intelligence Agency, left Wednesday night, an official said on condition of anonymity.
Members of team will meet with Pakistanis captured during U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. The official said Pakistani interrogators also will question prisoners who have been uncooperative during interrogation by American authorities.
Pakistan was the chief backer of the Afghan Taliban before Sept. 11, after which President Pervez Musharraf switched sides and joined the U.S.-led war against terrorism.
Pakistani officials have said their interrogators might have more success in extracting information from prisoners because of Pakistan's detailed knowledge of Afghanistan as well as the Taliban and al-Qaida.
