Palestinian Girl 'Shot Dead' in Gaza

James Rodgers | British Broadcasting Corporation | December 28, 2002

"On Wednesday and Thursday eight Palestinian militants were killed by Israeli forces, across the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. They were swift to take revenge. Islamic Jihad said that they were responsible for an attack on Friday night on a Jewish settlement in the West Bank in which four seminary students were shot dead."

An 11-year-old Palestinian girl has been shot dead in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian medical sources.

The incident took place in the Khan Younis refugee camp, near the Jewish settlement of Neve Dekalim, Palestinians said.

Hanneen Abu Suleiman was in her home when she was shot, according to reports from the area.

She was taken to a nearby hospital, but reportedly died two hours later.

Gunfire exchanges

The Khan Younis refugee camp is right next to the Jewish settlement of Neve Dekalim.

There are frequent exchanges of fire in the area between Palestinian fighters and Jewish settlers and Israeli soldiers.

Palestinian sources say that Hanneen was killed by shooting from the settlement.

The Israeli army said it was checking the reports.

The death is the latest in an upsurge of violence in the Middle East conflict.

This website is a tribute to Why War?, one of the nation's first and most innovative post-9/11 student antiwar organizations. Born on October 22, 2001 at Swarthmore College, we were a handful of freshmen and sophmores who vocally opposed the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. And now, seven years later, we are retiring this website as we focus our efforts on new directions. We hope that it continues to serve future activists and we remain confident that humanity is on the verge birthing a better world.
