Protesters of World Bank Speaker Surrounded by Police

Matthew Williams | Independent Media Center | June 8, 2002

" 'Protests against these institutions in the first world have started only in the last two or three years, while protests in the poor countries against these institutions have been going on for decades. The Western media has been conveniently ignoring it and continues to ignore it. There have been huge protests against World Bank–funded dams in India, Thailand and Guatemala. There have been have been huge protests against World Bank–funded water privatization in Bolivia, against electricity privatization in South Africa—I could go on and on.' " [more]

This website is a tribute to Why War?, one of the nation's first and most innovative post-9/11 student antiwar organizations. Born on October 22, 2001 at Swarthmore College, we were a handful of freshmen and sophmores who vocally opposed the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. And now, seven years later, we are retiring this website as we focus our efforts on new directions. We hope that it continues to serve future activists and we remain confident that humanity is on the verge birthing a better world.
