Step 3: Spread

November 1, 2001

Plainly put: spreading is the most important part of any organization. The biggest asset you will have are friendship bonds that will develop over the course of your organization’s activities. To strengthen this, throw parties, host BBQs, and have fun. People want to be a part of something that is both a lot of work and fun. Plan now on reserving the best party spot on your campus. Get a date that is a few months off so you have plenty of time to invite activist students from nearby schools. Before that point throw several smaller parties and invite people to hang out together — especially those students who may be new to the peace movement.

To spread you must grow your membership beyond “the same old people.” To do this you need to be a social, as well as political, force on campus.

Spreading also means taking it upon yourself to contact students at nearby colleges and universities, to go to their school and talk to their activist group. Use the successes on your campus as examples they should follow and encourage them to do the same when they become successful.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or suggestions. Good luck!

This website is a tribute to Why War?, one of the nation's first and most innovative post-9/11 student antiwar organizations. Born on October 22, 2001 at Swarthmore College, we were a handful of freshmen and sophmores who vocally opposed the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. And now, seven years later, we are retiring this website as we focus our efforts on new directions. We hope that it continues to serve future activists and we remain confident that humanity is on the verge birthing a better world.
