Step 1: Activate

November 1, 2001

Most colleges and universities in America likely have peace groups who have existed for years. Their agendas are probably quite diverse because during times such as only last year, when their America was not engaged in an overt war, they had to look to more subtle injustices that were being committed.

The first step to creating a peace movement in America, then, is to re-activate groups who may have become dormant or dominated by those who merely “preach to the choir.” It only takes one person to raise their hand and point out that the current “war on terrorism” is a serious issue that will likely continue for several years to come — and therefore should be the primary agenda of all peace groups.

You will soon find that people will rise to the occasion. Once you have a core group of four to five dedicated individuals you can move on to the next step.

This website is a tribute to Why War?, one of the nation's first and most innovative post-9/11 student antiwar organizations. Born on October 22, 2001 at Swarthmore College, we were a handful of freshmen and sophmores who vocally opposed the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. And now, seven years later, we are retiring this website as we focus our efforts on new directions. We hope that it continues to serve future activists and we remain confident that humanity is on the verge birthing a better world.
